Overview
The Moss Department of Construction Management at FIU is the prime resource for construction management education, training and technology development in the United States. Skilled construction managers who plan, coordinate, budget and supervise construction projects from early development to completion are in demand. The field is expected to grow 10 percent by 2028, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Part of FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing, the Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure, and Sustainability boasts the largest construction management graduate program in Florida. The Moss Department of Construction Management at FIU is committed to being the preeminent center for the advancement and dissemination of construction knowledge. The school fulfills its mission by imparting knowledge of the construction management process through expansion, excellent teaching, promoting public and university service, discovering new knowledge and solving problems through research and fostering creativity.

The master’s degree is rapidly becoming the entry-level requirement for middle and upper-level managerial positions in the construction industry. The primary goal of this program is to provide the knowledge and advanced skills essential for success in these positions. The program is flexible enough to accommodate graduates from other disciplines who may lack a part of the undergraduate background in construction management.
Our school has achieved extraordinary growth in research in the last 10 years. The faculty has submitted proposals to a broad spectrum of funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, the Building Construction Industry Advisory Committee, the State of Florida Department of Education, the Center For Indoor Air Research, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Florida High Technology and Industry Council, the Florida Department of Transportation, and the US Air Force.
The Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) program is housed within the Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure and Sustainability at the College of Engineering and Computing in the Construction Management Department. The MSCM degree is entirely focused on advancing your skills and knowledge in Construction Management and thus preparing you for future jobs in the Construction field (with expertise particularly in Managing Construction Projects). The program strives to prepare you for your next position in the field of Construction Management, and our graduates have been very successful in landing their dream jobs in Construction.

FIU’s Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) program is offered in two modalities to accommodate our students’ preferences. The admission and graduation requirements for both modalities are exactly the same and the courses offered are the same as well the only difference is the modality taught through the program.
Our in-person MSCM program classes usually start in the late afternoon. It is taught by the same leading faculty as the online program, and has the same course requirements.
Program Requirements: (30-36 semester hours total)
The admission and graduation requirements for our In-person and Online Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) program are exactly the same. Students require 30, 33 or 36 credits depending on their undergraduate degree.
- Construction Management: 30 credits
- Engineering/Architecture: 33 credits
- Other disciplines: 36 credits, 3 pre-requisites also required:
- BCN 1272 – Plans Interpretation (Blueprint Reading)
- BCN 2210 – Construction Materials
- BCN 3727 – Construction Sitework and Equipment
In case you need prerequisite courses, the program has recently launched a self-paced short course module that can be started at any time and will substitute all three pre-requisite courses. This short, self-paced course substitutes the pre-requisite requirements for admission to the MSCM program for applicants without an undergraduate degree in construction, engineering, or architecture. We recommend students to apply for Master of Science in Construction Management (MSCM) and let us evaluate their application and credentials first before enrolling into the pre-requisite courses.
Construction Management Short Courses
Prospective students who hold four-year undergraduate degrees in Construction Management or its equivalent in related fields may normally complete the Master’s degree in one academic year as full-time students. Equivalent in related fields should include studies in construction drawings, construction materials and methods, construction accounting and finance, economic planning, structures, site work, legal aspects of construction, cost estimating, construction scheduling and business management/finance. Students with deficiencies in these fields may need longer residence for the master’s degree, as they will be required to take specified basic courses.
Students seeking to obtain a Master of Science degree in Construction Management have a choice of either a thesis or non-thesis option. Choosing between a thesis and a non-thesis depends on the student’s preference, capabilities to conduct research, mutual interests between a faculty and the student. The only difference between both tracks is that in the thesis track a student needs to take two 3-credit hour research courses instead of regular elective construction courses.

Admission Requirements
The following must be submitted:
- Graduate Admission Application
- Official transcripts— All applicants must submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities. Transcripts must be submitted in sealed envelopes directly from the respective institutions. A four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution as well as a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 is required. GPA less than 3.0 fall under “Conditional Master’s Admission.” Learn more here.
- Proof of Degree— Submit official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is not posted on the official transcripts.
- GRE Test Scores— Not mandatory, unless your GPA is below 3.0
- An essay describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a master’s degree at FIU (optional).
- Résumé— Current and detailed (optional).
Only those applicants who have submitted complete application packets will be considered. Meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee of admissions.

- Official Transcripts Translation. If official transcripts are not in English, a second copy of the transcript must be requested for translation by an official translation agency. Both the official translation, as well as the original transcripts, must be submitted to FIU.

Note to international students: I-20s or F-1 transfers will not be issued since it is an online program. However, for In-person international students, I-20s or F-1 will be issued.

STEM Designated Program
The Master Science in Construction Management (MSCM) is a STEM-designated program, which sets students for OPT and CPT. Thus Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides students the right to work either full-time or part-time as long as the applicant is following the immigration guidelines. Please refer to the international student office for further updated information.
The program has an internship course that could be taken during your semester.
How does a STEM-designated program benefit a student?

- The STEM designation has been extremely beneficial to international students looking for work in the U.S. Traditionally, with an F-1 visa, you were eligible for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT allows students to work towards getting practical training to complement their field of studies in the U.S. once they have completed their program. STEM students are allowed to apply to extend that period of time even longer (up to 24 months).
- OPT is one of the best ways to earn a work visa or even possible U.S. citizenship. For the U.S., they attract and retain much-needed professionals in STEM-related industries.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has also classified STEM careers as having some of the greatest growth potential and the highest paying jobs for the 21st century. A STEM field education could be the most useful tool you have.

The total cost of the in-person MS in Construction Management is $22,804 for Florida residents and $32,202 for non-Florida residents.
